Subject line: Protect young people’s health – please sign EDM 1771: Plastic in Chewing Gum
Dear [MP’s Name],
I am writing as your constituent to ask that you urgently add your signature to Early Day Motion 1771: Plastic in Chewing Gum https://edm.parliament.uk/
The UK consumes 4 billion pieces of chewing gum every year. Each piece releases over 250,000 microplastic particles into the body, and research has linked microplastic ingestion to serious health conditions including cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes and infertility. Half of gum consumers are under 25, yet most people are unaware they are chewing plastic because manufacturers are allowed to hide these ingredients under the vague term “gum base.” The Lancet recently reported that plastics cause disease and death across all ages and cost the global economy more than $1.5 trillion annually.
MPs Wera Hobhouse and Alistair Carmichael are leading the call for a review. This EDM is supported by scientists, campaigners and sustainable businesses. Given your strong record on environmental and public health issues, I urge you to sign this motion to help protect young people and reduce harmful plastic exposure.
Thank you very much for your time and support.
Yours sincerely,
[Your full name] [Your postcode]
