Stevia and xylitol are both plant based sugar substitutes. We use a combination to get the flavour just right! Xylitol looks and tastes like sugar, but has fewer calories, doesn’t raise blood sugar levels and it's loved by dentists. To find out more about xylitol check out our blog.

What's in Nuud Gum?
Unlike regular gum brands that have hidden ingredients, we have nothing to hide! We want you to know exactly what we put in our refreshingly good gum.
All our plant based ingredients:
- Xylitol - we're sweet, naturally!
- Natural chicle - our sustainably harvested gum base
- Natural flavouring
- Glycerol (stabiliser)
- Gum arabic (thickener)
- Stevia (plant based sweetener)
- Carnauba wax (glaxing agent)
-
What does 'gum base' mean?
Look at the ingredients list on a pack of regular gum, like Extra and you'll see the term gum base.
Gum brands don't have to tell you what their gum base contains, it isn't required by law.
That's how they get away with hiding the plastic. It’s deceiving, and disgusting.
These are just some of the plastics that can be found in regular gum:
- Butadiene-styrene rubber
- Isobutylene-isoprene copolymer (butyl rubber)
- Paraffin (via the Fischer-Tropsch process)
- Petroleum wax
- Petroleum wax synthetic
- Polethylene
- Polvinyl acetate
Polyethylene is used to make plastic bags and is one of the main culprits behind the 21 million tonnes of micro-plastics thought to be in the Atlantic Ocean[3]. Polyvinyl acetate is a thermoplastic polymer used to make the PVA glue we all know so well from our school days. Yum?! We thought not.
According to HuffPost UK, Wrigley, the company responsible for brands such as Extra, Hubba Bubba and Airwaves has confirmed that polyvinyl acetate is used in a selection of their products. You won't be surprised to hear that when asked which brands included this ingredient, they were unable to confirm...
These ingredients pollute our planet, and their gum will outlive you!
-
What do you mean by 'plastic free'?
Most chewing gum is made from plastic. Nuud isn't!
Most gum brands hide plastic within their ingredients under the phrase gum base. These plastics include Polyethylene, one of the main compounds found in shampoo and water bottles,
At Nuud, we don't use a plastic gum base, we use a sustainably harvested tree sap called chicle.
-

As you can imagine, it can get into rivers and oceans in the form of micro plastics.
-
How is regular chewing gum made?
Like us, we imagine you were pretty shocked when you found out most gum is made from plastic.
Most gum contains the same plastics as those found in plastic straws, bottles, bags and even car tyres. It's hidden in the ingredients, under the phrase gum base.
We only use refreshingly good plastic free, plant based ingredients.
-
Does chewing gum pollute the planet?
Plastic chewing gum creates huge problems for people and our planet. Brits chew over 5 million pieces every year. You’ll see it stuck to 90% of pavements across the UK and it costs the taxpayer millions to clean off our streets. Even when responsibly disposed, plastic chewing gum ends up in landfill or water systems contributing to the plastic waste problem.
Nuud is made from plants and biodegrades just like a banana skin!
-
Do the actual regular chewing gum pieces contain plastic?
Yes, it might be hard to believe, each piece of regular chewing gum is made from single-use plastic. For example, regular gum contains Polyethylene, which is one of the main compounds found in shampoo and water bottles. These plastics are hidden under the phrase gum base. It’s pretty gross! Discover more about big gum's dirty secret.
